But before you head out to buy any French furniture it's worth remembering that there is no such thing as a single style. French furniture is not a style in itself, but a category of styles, and if you start mixing them together without really understanding the differences in style, then you could find your classic French look becoming rather awkward and inelegant.3 | Fancy Tiger Crafts The DIY knitting, felting, and crocheting capital of Denver lures craftkids in thick-framed glasses with Japanese pink-robot-print fabrics, silk and bamboo yarn, and clumps of multicolor wool. 1 S. Stretchers, front legs, and back supports. From the 1-by-6, cut two 19 1/4-inch pieces for the front and back stretchers and four 13 1/4-inch pieces for the front legs. The stretchers serve as cross-braces. Cut the 2-by-2 into two 24-inch pieces for the back supports.2. Attach the wheel assembly to the seat frame. Flip the seat-frame assembly upside down, glue the back leg assembly in position, and then clamp it in place. In the positions shown in the sketch at right, drill 1-inch-diameter holes 1/4 inch deep and centered on the angled back and front edges of the back legs. With a 5/16-inch bit, continue the hole in another 6 inches. Be very careful to drill these holes straight through the 2-by-6s. Once the holes are drilled, attach the four long lag screws with washers.1 | Lee Alex DecorThe design is scaled for a standard 6-foot seat cushion. Materials listed are for one chaise. You'll have to order the 6-inch wheels and the special hinges that sneak the pivot point up between a pair of slats.EAT At the Chocolate Maven, around the corner, refuel on a grilled chicken sandwich, and save room for a chocolate buttercream cupcake. $$; 821 W. The wheels slide onto a threaded rod secured to the back legs; the copper pipe keeps the wheels apart. Because of the wheels' design, the copper pipe fits neatly into the hub.Boho chic in DenverWhen it comes to French furniture most people tend to think of the Rococo period which flourished during Louis XV's reign. This style was full of decadence, fancy artwork, frivolous decoration and asymmetrical creativity. Ornate gilt edged mirrors with floral engravings and carvings spilling out all around, armoires with cherubs and flowers carved in carefree abandon and even the table legs were designed without a single straight edge to be seen.[TABULAR DATA OMITTED]2. Assemble and attach the back brace. Mount the notched ends of the two 12-inch back braces to the 19-inch cross-brace. The back braces attach 2 1/8 inches in from the ends of the cross-brace. So you won't split the wood, use a screw pilot to predrill the holes for the mounting screws. The Baroque style of Louis XIV was all about strength and power, with bold architecture and French furniture that was strong, powerful, chunky and a dominant feature within a room. For many people this simply isn't appropriate because unless your room is fairly sizeable, large baroque furniture will simply overpower anything else in the room, quite apart from taking up space. In a large room, baroque furniture can look stunning, but you need the space for it to work.Denver boho chic5 | Santa Fe by Design New Mexico designers hold their own on this showroom's A-list of international kitchen-and-bath fittings names. Closed Sat-Sun; Suite D101; santafe bydesign.com--KATIE ARNOLDSan Diego retro coolThis certainly makes for a great look, and can be achieved today by buying the right style of French furniture. But remember that after the Rococo period French furniture entered the Neo-Classical style, harking back to Greek and Roman architectural styles, with a more formal, linear and symmetrical approach. Trying to combine Rococo with Neo-classical would be a disaster, and certainly one to avoid.4 | Subtext Gallery The gallery-plus-store's aesthetic runs from pop surrealist to lowbrow, but is always affordable. In a mix of photography, illustration, and graphic design, the sweet spot is limited-edition silk-screen prints ($40-$100). Open by appointment; 2479 Kettner Blvd.; subtextgallery.com or 619/546-8800.1. Attach the hinges. Separate each hinge assembly into its two parts. Mount one of the parts so it's centered and flush with one end of a 2-by-2 back support. Its other part attaches to a 2-by-6 rail. To determine where the hinge goes on the rail, align the 2-by-2 with the rail's top and back edges. Separate the hinged pieces before proceeding with the next step. For kitsch-free Southwest style, look to the Pacheco Park complexFirebird MonoRail pendant lamp (from $290) by Tech Lighting from Form Function (formplusfunction.com).For each front leg, hold one unnotched angled piece against the inside face of a 2-by-6 seat rail 6 inches back from the front end. The top of the 1-by-6 should be flush with the top edge of the 2-by-6. Mark a line on the 1-by-6 along the angled lower edge of the 2-by-6, then cut along this line.3. Seat rails. For each of the 6-foot 2-by-6s that run the length of the chaise, use a circular saw to make the two angled cuts shown in the sketch below. Cut from 2 inches down one short side to 44 inches down the adjacent side (E to F), and from 2 inches down the other short side to 3 3/4 inches down the adjacent side (G to H).1. Attach the slats. Cut spacers out of the remaining 3/4-inch-thick scrap to help you position the slats. Start with the back; put the remaining eight slats in place with spacers and a piece of cardboard between each to make the gaps a uniform 7/8 inch. This support assembly then attaches to the 2-by-2 back supports. Measuring 8 inches back from the hinged ends of each 2-by-2, predrill a centered hole for a 1/4- by 2-inch lag screw, then mount the support assembly with a washer on both sides of each 1-by-2 brace. Set the lags snug, but loose enough for the brace to swing freely.ANDREA GOMEZ ROMERO (5)With no tricky cuts or joints in this project, it should be achievable for even a novice woodworker. Read through the plans, and if you're comfortable working with the tools listed below and can follow the cutting and attachment sequence on the following pages, this could be a weekend project.4 | T-Trove Asian Decor The exterior may look like a warehouse, but the chi inside this showroom is fantastic.
