The 'Praying Moses' of West Nab

LAST week we had some fun with the weird, mostly natural 'sculpture park' at West Nab, above Meltham.

"We wedged a book under some rocks up there for visitors to sign and say what they thought of it, but the book disappeared."He always loved art and would have loved to have gone to art college, but he had to earn a living so he went into the mill."He called it 'Moses at prayer' but we don't know why. He wasn't particularly religious," she said."Later, he started a property renovation business and got a set of stonemason's hammers and chisels. He built his own house, but he carved sculptures to relax.CAPTION(S):The pictures left and right tell the story."I might go up there soon and put another book there."Valda tells me this was carved by her father in the early 1970s. The family lived then in Thongsbridge, but had previously lived in Cudworth and Holmfirth.* ROCK FESTIVAL: 'Moses at prayer' by Kenneth Maw with Kenneth's daughter Valda (front) and two friends in the early 1970s. The Outdoor Chaise Lounge

Chaise lounges are unique types of sofas that have a backrest. The original concept for the modern day chaise lounge goes as far back as ancient Egypt. Back then it was used indoors and was essentially a combination of a day bed and a chair.

Garden Chaise LounguesChaise Lounges for your PatioChaise lounges evolved over the course of time and, in sixteenth century France, the first "Chaise Longue" was designed. The French word "longue" means "long chair." Still used indoors, these pieces of furniture were designed so that people could comfortably recline on their backs instead of having to rest on their sides.When choosing furniture for this type of serene environment you should focus on materials that are strong and sturdy - materials that can easily resist the elements.Either a wooden, wicker, or steel chaise longue could be a perfect accessory for your outdoor swimming pool. Can you imagine going into the pool for a dip, then coming out, flopping down on your chaise lounge and soaking up the sun while you sip a cool drink? Life doesn't get much better than that.Unmatched in looks and comfort, this furniture is perfect when you want a piece of furniture that can be used as either a chair or as a bed. Although materials used in the construction of outdoor "long chairs" may be different than those used for indoor furniture, the one thing that they all have in common is that they are extremely comfortable.There were many iterations of this type of furniture in a lot of different cultures throughout the years. But it wasn't until these "long chairs" came to the United States that they were used as outdoor furniture. And that happened because of American's love of the great outdoors.Chaise lounges are probably the most perfect piece of furniture to put in your garden. What could be better than stretching out and listening to the sounds of Nature and enjoying her bounties?If you like to entertain you will love adding a chaise lounge your patio's dcor. And if you place two chaise lounges side by side your guests will appreciate being able to lean back while enjoying their conversation.Poolside Chaise Lounges

Choose Laminate Wood Flooring in Calgary, Canada

The types of laminate wood floor Calgary businesses are selling today is tough and long -lasting. It is created with special coatings to resist moisture and to repel harmful UV light rays, so the flooring remains in new condition despite wear, tear and heavy duty commercial cleaning. It comes down to checking the label or packaging to know for sure. If you have any doubt, contact the manufacturer. As the store from which you purchased it for the contact info or look it up on line if you cant find it elsewhere.

Area rugs can always be used to soften the look and add the warmth and comfort only fiber can bring to a room. Choose wood laminate flooring as a beautiful way to add value, good looks, and utility to any Calgary room.

Patio Furniture Extend Your Living Quarters

Your living quarters dont have to stop within the perimeters of the traditional rooms like the kitchen, living room and bedroom. Pull your living quarters farther out by dressing up your patio. Patio furniture is the key to pulling the look together.

If style is not a high concern on your list but finding cheap, practical patio furniture is, check out the resin tables and chairs on the market. The tables and chairs are sturdy. You can even buy resin foot rests, end tables and coffee tables. This type of furniture weathers well in all elements and the only style concern you face with resin furniture is fading or dullness that comes along with being outside. You can find resin furniture at just about any discount store. Its seasonal, so start looking for it to appear on shelves and display floors in the spring. The price for a simple resin chair ranges from $6 to $10 in most places. Chaise lounge chairs made from the same resin are a little more expensive. You can expect to pay $30 to $40 each for those. The price of resin tables varies based on the size. A small table, like an end table or a foot stool, are about the same price as the simple chairs. A large table costs more. The high end of the design in resin furniture is the table with a hole in the middle for an umbrella. In addition to providing shade from the hot sun, an umbrella can really dress up the look of resin patio furniture. A simple green or white table becomes festive when a brightly colored umbrella is thrown into the mix!So, no matter how much money you have to spend, you can extend your living quarters outside the boundary of tradition. Invest in some patio furniture and you can create an outdoor living room of sorts!Install a wood floor in Calgary homes to enjoy now, and watch as the value of the home rises. Use a damp mop or broom for quick clean ups, or do a more thorough shampooing as needed occasionally. The smooth, hard surface flooring most Calgary vendors recommend is ideal when allergies are a concern. Unlike carpeting, smooth floors and laminate flooring does not trap allergens and hold them in any fiber materials. Carpeting has that benefit of catching and holding allergens like a filter until they can be swept away, but trampling on carpet could also release them back into the interior air and possibly cause some allergy problems. Regular cleaning of all flooring surfaces can greatly improve indoor air quality.

So, no matter how much money you have to spend, you can extend your living quarters outside the boundary of tradition. Invest in some patio furniture and you can create an outdoor living room of sorts!

Choosing The Right Furniture

The furniture in a person's home says a lot about personal style and taste. In effect, most of us spend endless hours searching for the perfect piece of furniture before we actually make a purchase. With the availability of furniture from so many different time periods and schools of design, the choice can sometimes be daunting.

Glue all the dowels into place. Drill 2-inch-deep 3/16-inch holes through the top edge of the sides into the center of each 1-inch dowel, then glue a 2-inch-long 3/16-inch dowel plug into each hole. Finish with another coat of polyurethane.Once the pieces are painted and dry, attach the 22 1/4-inch dowel in the base. Nail it from the top edge with 1-inch (2d) nails, then attach the leg supports to the base with glue and 1 1/4-inch (3d) nails so that the rear dowel in the leg support rests on the base and its center is 3 1/2 inches forward from the center of the dowel set in the base. When the triangular leg supports are positioned correctly, they are 1/4 inch off the ground, and the center of the forwardmost dowel is 12 inches off the ground.Showrooms generally sort furniture by room, and within these rooms the pieces are further distinguished by style. If you are looking for a Chippendale sofa, for example, you will certainly find it with living room furniture, but it probably won't be placed next to the black suede chaise. Sometimes it can take a lot of patience to browse through furniture showrooms. Because your furniture will brand you, though, it will be worth your while to take your time and wait until you find what's right for you.Clamp the two legs together and drill the 29 7/8-inch holes; centers are 5/8 inch down from the top edge and 1 7/8 inches apart.

Regardless of style, it is imperative that the furniture you choose is solidly built. Spending a little more may be worth your while if the furniture is made with better materials, as it will prove more durable in the long run. There is always room for practicality in a furniture purchase.

Winning designs for laid-back lounging

These chairs won top honors--and each cost less than $75 to make

Clamp the base pieces together, then drill a 7/8-inch hole with its center 9 inches in from the rear of the bases and 5/8 inch down from the top. Separate the base pieces, then glue and nail with 2 1/2-inch (8d) finishing nails the three 6- by 21-inch cross-braces between the base pieces at the positions shown in the drawing. On the outside faces of the assembled base, attach the four spacer blocks with glue and 1 1/4-inch (3d) nails at the positions shown in the drawing.Complete the project by filling the nail holes and touching up with the appropriate color paint. The back slips between dowel pairs; stops rest on the top edge of the leg supports, and the lower section of the back stops against the cross-braces on the base.Many buyers are drawn to antiques. Antique furniture often creates a regal air in a home. If combined creatively with more modern pieces, antiques can add flavor to even a contemporary styled room. Mixing and matching different styles of furniture is quite fashionable these days, if done correctly.Besides wood-finishing supplies, the only tools you'll need are a drill, a saber saw, a sander, and various fasteners listed in the instructions below. With both chairs, take pains to drill the dowel holes straight (a guide attachment for your drill will ensure accurate bores).There has a been a trend recently toward studio furniture. This furniture is built in a studio environment, not by a large factory manufacturer, and therefore tends to be more unique. Studio furniture makers view themselves as artists or craftsmen. Many learn their craft not through apprenticeship but through university-level design and art courses. Of course, original style often equals higher prices. Just as we pay more for designer clothing, we pay more for carefully crafted furniture. Studio furniture tends to be more contemporary but may be influenced by more traditional furniture styles.Patio furniture not only enhances the appeal of your backyard, it can provide loads of enjoyment for outdoor living for many seasons to come.Glue the inner arm and leg pieces onto the arm-legs; they will fit together so that the finished 1 1/2-inch-thick pieces sandwich each side piece (the side pieces' dowel hole, ninth from the top, passes through each arm-leg piece 2 inches in from its forward edge). Sand the arm-leg edges even and smooth. Drill the 1-inch hole in the arm-leg piece through that ninth dowel hole in each side piece; drill two additional 1-inch holes 2 inches up from the bottom and 1 1/4 inches in from the sides of each arm-leg piece.The logo for Victor Robinson's entry was lettered such that the X in relax is the profile of his elegant chaise. The simple X-frame is accentuated by the bright purple stain on the chaise sides. For ample comfort, foam pipe insulation pads the dowel platform. Arm, leg, and side pieces are cut from a 2- by 6-foot piece of 3/4-inch birch plywood. Transfer the pattern on page 121 to the plywood, then cut out the eight pieces. Clamp the left and right sides together, and sand the edges so that the two sides match. Then, while the sides are still clamped together, drill 1-inch holes for the 27 dowels that form the platform. Centers for the holes are 1 1/4 inches down from the top edge of the plywood and 2 3/4 inches apart; they begin 1 1/2 inches in the form the top (the widest end) and end 2 1/2 inches from the tip of the foot.RELAX CHAISEFor the final assembly, slide two 22 1/2-inch dowels through the foam, then set them in place through the 8th and 10th dowel holes from the top (these are the only two that can't slide into place from the outside of the sides). Avoid breaking open the partially cut seams on the foam.With a sharp knife, cut foam insulation (for 1-inch pipe) to 23 inches (2 inches over the 21-inch space between the sides to allow for shrinkage in the weather). Paint thinner will take any unwanted printing off the foam.Slide the remaining dowels into place and set all with 2d nails through the top edge of the plywood.This sleek, colorful design has no moving parts, yet the back is adjustable depending on which pair of dowels it's dropped between. The tightly spaced dowel platform is surprisingly comfortable. But what made it a winner is its fanciful swooping lines that make it as much a piece of garden sculpture as it is furniture.Thread the rest of the dowels into place, setting the foam in place and sliding the dowels through from one side to the other. Fit the three longer dowels through the arm-leg sections. Position dowels so they are flush with the outer surfaces of the sides and the arm-legs.When choosing items of patio furniture, it's worth knowing a bit about the different types of materials and their features. For example, some outdoor furniture is not built to withstand adverse weather conditions and is designed to be stored inside when not in use. Lightweight aluminum, plastic and wicker furniture falls into this category, and is generally cheaper to buy than the more solid items that can be left outside year round. These types of chairs and tables require little maintenance and are easily portable. They are often designed to be folded away or stacked, to save on storage space.Stain and finish all the parts. Robinson used thinned oil-base paint to get the deep purpose color on the sides; he then coated all the pieces (including the sides) with two coats of polyurethane--one coat now, one at the project's end.DESIGNS FOR OUTDOOR LIVING, A COMPETITION sponsored by Sunset Magazine, set more than a score of the country's brightest design students at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, to the task of devising projects for a Western deck, patio, or garden. Here we present the first- and second-place winners: both are chaises, and both rely on plywood and dowels as their primary materials; each can be built for less than $75. But, more important, both are highly imaginative designs you won't find in any store, yet you can reasonably build them yourself over a long weekend.Furniture can reflect many personality characteristics, from fun and flirty to classy and sophisticated to modern and edgy. How do you choose the right piece?STREAMLINE LOUNGERFrom 1-inch dowels, cut 26 pieces to 22 1/2 inches, and 3 pieces to 24 inches.

Glue all the dowels into place. Drill 2-inch-deep 3/16-inch holes through the top edge of the sides into the center of each 1-inch dowel, then glue a 2-inch-long 3/16-inch dowel plug into each hole. Finish with another coat of polyurethane.

RECLINING comfortably on two plum-cushioned chaise lounges, we gazed across the brilliant blue surface of the Hotel Bel-Air Cap-Ferrat's "horizon pool" at the Mediterranean. The French expression tromp l'oeil (literally, deceive the eye) might have been coined for this cleverly constructed oasis Without a restraining wall, the water pours over the outer rim into a catch basin, then is recycled, illusion of flowing directly into the sea, the false horizon giving the pool its name. While at the other end or side of the room, a pair of book-cases, cabinets or a credence. These balance the fireplace, since they are placed against the wall and have a corresponding shelf, cornice or mantel line.About midway between Nice and Monte Carlo lies Cap Ferrat. On this narrow spit of land jutting into the Mediterranean, the magical blue light that inspired Henri Matisse and a host of other painters led to the naming of the area the Cote d'Azur (azure coast). The verdant pinewoods, steep gorges, and abundance of brilliantly colored, fragrant shrubs and flowers vie for attention with the gently rolling sea. It is little wonder that, upon viewing this splendid sight, King Leopold II of Belgium was moved to describe it as "paradise on Earth."Almost every island offers condo resort properties, but you'll find the widest range of accommodations in the most popular destinations for American tourists: Barbados, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Antigua, Aruba and St. Maarten. Three personal favorites are Colony Cove in St. Croix, Island Pine Villas in Grand Cayman, and Barrymore Beach Apartments in Antigua. Also remember that on less developed islands, rates will be cheaper, but don't necessarily expect a modern, American-style apartment.Used to the infuriatingly interminable delays in today's mega-airports, we were amazed and delighted to be able to retrieve our luggage, clear immigration, and pick up our rented Renault in less than half an hour after touching down at Nice Cote d'Azur International Airport. It was mid-morning, and the sun glinted off the whitestoned hotels lining the road to our left and the immaculately groomed beach to our right as we drove along the shore road that skirted Nice. Swaying palm trees shaded the parallel path for strollers, and the beach already was filling up with sun worshippers, unfurling straw mats and peeling down to the bikinis and monokinis that are almost a uniform on the Riviera.If there is a large array of furniture in the living-room, keep the carpet, and furniture upholstery all to one tone.At the outskirts of the city, we began to climb as the road became a gently curving cliff drive. In short order, we passed through Villefranche-sur-Mer, turned off for Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and, once we figured out that the town and the cape were separate entities, searched for and found the tiny sign that directed us back down to the narrow shore road leading to the hotel.Realizing its potential, the Compagnie Hoteliere de Centres de Tourisme Automobile selected the tip of the cape in 1908 to erect a hotel in which dukes and princesses, as well as financial barons, could pass the winter in an ambience that reflected their wealth. As years and wars came and went, so did the mindset that considered the French Riviera suitable only as a winter resort. Water sports, golf, tennis, and suntans drew the "beautiful people" throughout the calendar, and a new era was born.One of the biggest advantages--and savings--to renting a condo or apartment is being able to prepare your meals. "I don't travel anywhere with children without a kitchen," says Leslie Johnson, a Stamford, Conn., finance executive and mother of two. When she and husband Daryl decided to take the family on a Caribbean vacation, they opted for a rented two-bedroom, two-bath timeshare at the Costa Linda Resort in Aruba. (Timeshare owners frequently rent out their properties, and it's a good way for others to try out the concept without making a commitment to buy.) "It was very relaxing," recalls Johnson "and we definitely saved money." Johnson says her children were also able to play their favorite videos on the VCR after a busy day at the beach.With so many executives striving to create familial goodwill in their organizations, motivating employees through incentive travel is on the rise. Generally offered by companies as a reward to salespeople who achieve beyond year-end goals, incentive travel is not about taking trips; it's about creating one-of-a-kind experiences, complete with exotic destinations and luxurious hotels.Can one imagine a more livable living-room than one with a large, soft sofa in front of a fireplace, behind it a long table filled with books, while holding a lamp at either end. Or else, at the end of the sofa, a small table for the reading lamp and on either side a pair of comfortable chairs?Our luggage swiftly was unloaded, keys were collected so the car could be spirited off to be parked, and registration took but moments. Then, after a ride up in a turn-of-the-century glass-and-metal-grilled elevator and short walk down the corridor, we were led into a perfect French country sitting room. Pink, green, and cream accents were everywhere, from the wallpaper and drapery to the padded headboard and spread on the king-sized bed, echoing the stripes of the sofa and armchairs, as well as the fresh flowers in vases throughout the room.Yet that's not enough. To be truly successful, an incentive experience must include activities, such as beach Olympics, scavenger hunts, parties in special venues and private yacht charters, that are not always accessible to the individual traveler. For instance, Tate, went with his group on a private catamaran journey to a secluded snorkeling spot, and then on to St. Kitts for some gambling.By the time you are ready to choose the furniture for the living room, the walls and floor coverings should be in place so that the choice of furniture will be merely the selection of the best out of several possibilities. Of course, the quality, shape and color of furniture varies, and the quantity will as well.An armoire opened to remind us we still were in the last decade of the 20th century. Revealed were a television set that, if we wanted the intrusion, could pull in CNN and French, Italian, German, and British programming, reflecting the new age of the European Community. A well-stocked mini-bar and refrigerator and a safe that allowed us to set our own combination added to the amenities.

At the end of the gardens, a parapet overlooks the sea and, below, Le Club Dauphin, the pool club built into the hillside. Access is via a succession of pathways wending their way down the steep hill or, for the less energetic, an electric-powered funicular (tram) that delivers one from garden to the club complex. By mutual agreement, we made it a point to walk down each day, but take advantage of the easy way up.

B. E. Caribbean travel guide

When most of us think of traveling to the Caribbean, we dream of lazing the days away in a chaise lounge on a sandy beach or under a shady tree. Business and work are usually the furthest things from our mind.

Among the benefits for incentive winners is the brag appeal. "You don't lean over the garden wall and share with someone that you just got a $1,500 bonus in your paycheck. But you can lean over the wall and casually mention to your neighbor, "Carl you pick up my mail next week? I'm going on a Caribbean cruise."The following resources list rental properties in the Caribbean. Find several that appeal to you, then ask your travel agent. That someplace is Peter Island, whose 1,800 acres are almost entirely taken up by its resort. After flying into nearby Tortola, groups of up to 115 arrive on this fantasy island via private yacht, where they'll find lush gardens, secluded beaches, gourmet dining and an array of water sports. The resort's management will arrange almost anything a group desires, and creative incentive planners have free reign to create themed events. Rack rates for a standard room are $19 5 (May 1-Sept.30) and $275 (Oct. 1-Dec.22) per night.On the coffee table were a bright bouquet of pink roses, a bowl of fresh fruit (frequently replenished during our stay), and an insulated wicker basket containing a delicate china tea service. When opened, the fragrant aroma of herbal tea filled the room. Should Madam and Monsieur wish, we were informed, this invigorating brew could be delivered daily.Driving through the gates and into the driveway, we were whisked from the hustle and bustle of the 20th century to another time, as if we had entered the courtyard of a country manor of the Belle Epoque era. Inside the Bel-Air, this impression was reinforced by soaring ceilings, marble pillars, deep, floral-printed chairs and sofas scattered around two open lobby rooms, and, through the floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors, sweeping vistas of riotously colored gardens.Peter Island Resort & Yacht Harbor, British Virgin Islands (800-346-4451)Whatever the reason for your visit, the Caribbean will welcome you with open arms. The islands offer the opportunity to network and share in a unique environment and cultural experience. Ire, Mon!Where to go for a great incentive? The Caribbean offers a wealth of idyllic incentive spots. If your pockets are deep, there's the Four Seasons on Nevis, the Caribbean's only five-diamond resort, a place, "that puts you in a mesmerized state," as Tate puts it. If your purse strings are tighter, Duyff recommends the Hyatt Regency on Aruba, his choice as the best hotel on an island that is a favorite with incentive planners for its unusual landscape, friendly people and new golf course. But for even more unusual experiences, take a look at these three Caribbean hideaways. Remember: wherever you choose to go, negotiate hard for discounts. Group discounts of 10% to 30% are not uncommon, even at the finest resorts.At the end of the gardens, a parapet overlooks the sea and, below, Le Club Dauphin, the pool club built into the hillside. "Families, older couples and some singles prefer this set-up. And many large hotels offer cottages or villas, in addition to rooms."Paradise for rentOne week later, feeling just like Alice through the looking glass, we stood at that ship's rail, s and the grand hotel in a mirror image of the scene. This juxtaposition of images had come about as t our decision to explore the pleasures of the French Riviera's Cote d'Azur first by land, then by seaMantel accessories may be applied to the other shelves and the tables in the room. Keep them free from dust-collecting, trivial things, while creating a sense of order and cleanliness.But, before you run out and book that ticket, ask your travel agent: Is there daily maid service? Does it have a kitchen? Are babysitters available? Are all taxes, energy surcharges and gratuities included? Is there a supermarket nearby? Is a security guard on the premises? Once you've enjoyed a vacation with all the comforts of home, you'll never want to make a midnight run to a hotel ice machine again!Balance is maintained by using objects in pairs a pair of vases, candlesticks, bowls, or jars. Placed at either end of the mantel, they should be higher than the intervening objects, to form a sweeping curve. Also they help to frame in the over-mantel picture or mirror.Remember that it is always better to leave a space empty than to have it occupied by a badly placed piece of furniture. Good furniture needs space to be seen to its advantage.But in the Caribbean, tourism is its business. In 1993, almost 7 million Americans traveled to the region, accounting for 52.5% of all stop-over visitors and one-half of this $11.1 billion industry.The setting might have been turn-of-the-century. but the bathroom was all modern conveniences. A deep marble tub held a temperature-controlled shower/shampoo attachment, with a hinged glass wing-door to prevent splashing. A wall-mounted hair dryer and swing-out shaving and makeup mirror made grooming easy, while thick terry robes and plentiful towels of all sizes filled a shelf. Behind a door, a separate water closet contained a toilet and bidet in total privacy. A floor-to-ceiling window let in sunlight and brought the splendor of the sprawling gardens inside.In developing the original simple formula there may be added a chaise, a good-size table, another large chair, and another small table

Decorating Ideas to make your Living Room more Livable

Above all else, the furniture in the living-room should make it livable. It should be grouped so that it offers centers of interest, convenience and comfort. Look for upholstered seating with homespun-type fabric, or toss a pieced quilt over plain fabric or leather. An old rocker is a great addition.

To accommodate its clientele, the Hotel Bel-Air Cap-Ferrat renovated, modernized, and threw open its doors year round, though its style, like a grand dame who has undergone a successful face-lift, remained unchanged. The Bel-Air's timeless elegance has made it the standout of all the hotels nestled on the cape. Its well-earned reputation made our choice of a base for the land portion of our trip an easy one.Rental options are many. You can rent directly from a property owner, go through a stateside real estate agency or book a package at a condo hotel through a reputable travel agent. Most travelers choose the latter, letting a travel agent work out the details. A package deal is usually more convenient and reliable, with extras thrown in, such as airport transfers, maid service, manager's cocktail party, taxes and gratuities, and sometimes free admission to local attractions. Plus, you can put everything on a credit card up front. (Some independent rental properties don't accept credit cards.) Condo vacation packages are now offered by such major tour operators as American Airlines and Delta Dream Vacations, to name a few.With the globalization of business, more and more people are traveling to the Caribbean for work-related reasons. For some, these are formal meetings with managers and executives of regional companies; for others, the visits are short-term work assignments. Still others come for work-related leisure activities, such as incentive trips and conventions.There's a hot new trend in Caribbean tourism: Savvy business and leisure travelers are discovering that for the price of a hotel room--or less--they can rent a one- or two-bedroom apartment with all the comforts of home--full kitchen, living room or sitting area, balcony or patio and maybe even laundry facilities or a VCR. These homes away from home offer a familiarity that sterile hotel rooms simply cannot provide.The main essentials are a comfortable sofa, a table large enough to hold books, magazines and lamps, and at least two comfortable, upholstered chairs and a smaller table.In fitting furniture to its architectural background there are 3 things to consider
  • contour and proportion;
  • design and decorative detail;
  • color of wood.
The first two points are obviously necessary; it is in the last that the furnishing of many rooms fails. Oak and mahogany do not mix amicably; one does not set off the other because there is not sufficient contrast, nor are they closely enough allied to harmonize. On the other hand, black ebony and yellowish burr walnut, such as is used in inlaying seaweed pattern in oak, are examples of harmony gained.What can your organization expect to get back? For starters, improved morale and stronger relationships between incentive awardees and management. These feelings, in turn, can be taken back to the workplace to kick-off an even better year, according to Phil Duyff, president of Duyff International Inc., an incentive travel company in St. Louis.From Saint-Tropez to Monaco, the Riviera conjures up thoughts of gambling casinos, topless beaches festivals, and racing car rallies. Yet, there is another aspect to this area in southeast France, on of elegance and style indelibly stamped on it more than a century ago. Various houses of European ro in business and industry, and famed authors and artists found the sun-drenched land between the Maritime Alps and the shore a welcome refuge from the harsher winters they faced at home. Many proceeded to build elaborate chateaux and gardens that flourished in the semi-tropical climate--after all, the Riviera is just across the Mediterranean from the warmth of North Africa--establishing a colony to which their names lent a glamorous cachet.Several years ago, while the hotel was undergoing extensive renovations, she envisioned how the then-overgrown landscape could be tamed and enhanced, and the project became a labor of love. Under Mme. Maissen's guidance, the umbrella pines that encircled the Bel-Air were cut to window height, thus affording a sweeping panorama of the Mediterranean as one enters the hotel and looks out through the curved windows that surround the domed lobby. The diversity and colors of the plantings throughout the grounds stimulate the senses, especially the fragrances of the myriad varieties of flowers stretching as far as the eye can see.

A project for the lounging life - chaise lounge

Start building this chaise on Saturday morning and you'll be lounging by Sunday brunch

Refer to the photograph above to identify key pieces of the chaise as you read through the instructions.Cut a diagonal from the center of the 12-inch side to the square corner of the 24-inch side (from A to B, and C to D in the sketch above).You simply can't mix the styles or periods together and hope they'll work together nicely. They won't. It's also worth remembering that there was a French Revolution between Rococo and Neo-Classicism, and the change in style of furniture and decor was directly influenced by the Revolution and the rise of Napoleon.2 | Form Function At Santa Fe's go-to lighting source, don't miss the Japanese-paper sconces from Jacqueline Mallegni--who makes her ethereal lights using rattan and willow from Abiquiu--or the tapers in saturated shades like pumpkin and seafoam. Screws behind the hinges should go into the 2-by-2s, and screws in front of the hinges into the 2-by-6s. Now push the rod ends into the holes in the 2-by-6s until the wheels bump.

1. Attach the slats. Cut spacers out of the remaining 3/4-inch-thick scrap to help you position the slats. Start with the back; put the remaining eight slats in place with spacers and a piece of cardboard between each to make the gaps a uniform 7/8 inch.

French Furniture How To Identify Styles Which Complement Each Other

There is no doubt at all that introducing items of French furniture into the home can generate a fantastic, beautiful and very evocative look. French furniture has a style that is unmistakable, and can really transform a room fairly easily. A bedroom, for example, can be entirely transformed by introducing a French style bed, perhaps with a chaise longue at the foot, an armoire in the corner, a large ornate French mirror on the wall reflecting light from the window, crisp white linen and gently wafting cotton curtains at the open window, all adding up to a fantastic look that's a world away from a suburban high street look.

For each of the 6-foot 2-by-6s that run the length of the chaise, use a circular saw to make the two angled cuts shown in the sketch below. Cut from 2 inches down one short side to 44 inches down the adjacent side (E to F), and from 2 inches down the other short side to 3 3/4 inches down the adjacent side (G to H).1. Attach the slats. Cut spacers out of the remaining 3/4-inch-thick scrap to help you position the slats. Start with the back; put the remaining eight slats in place with spacers and a piece of cardboard between each to make the gaps a uniform 7/8 inch.This support assembly then attaches to the 2-by-2 back supports. Measuring 8 inches back from the hinged ends of each 2-by-2, predrill a centered hole for a 1/4- by 2-inch lag screw, then mount the support assembly with a washer on both sides of each 1-by-2 brace. Set the lags snug, but loose enough for the brace to swing freely.ANDREA GOMEZ ROMERO (5)With no tricky cuts or joints in this project, it should be achievable for even a novice woodworker. Read through the plans, and if you're comfortable working with the tools listed below and can follow the cutting and attachment sequence on the following pages, this could be a weekend project.4 | T-Trove Asian Decor The exterior may look like a warehouse, but the chi inside this showroom is fantastic.
