Property OF DOLLS

Block, Francesca Lia

Residence OF DOLLS. Il by Barbara McClintock. ISBN 978--06113094-six. New York: Harper, 2010. eighty pp. $15.99. From my initial glance at the gorgeously dressed, fairy-like characters depicted on the cover, I couldn't wait to enter the Household of Dolls - to admire the very small chandelier and the green velvet chaise, and become a part of the magical entire world of Wildflower, Rockstar, and Miss Selene, the inhabitants of the exquisite Victorian home. The slim, pocket-dimension book from the crew of renowned writer Francesca Lia Block and beloved illustrator Barbara McClintock is a good deal a good deal more than just a doll story, though it does have all the things that will delight children who adore pretend play - lovely wardrobes, miniature furniture, and the intriguing opportunities of dolls who arrive to lifestyle when no one is looking. It is also a tragic but in the long run redemptive tale of Madison Blackberry, the rich, spoiled, and neglected boy or girl who is the owner of the charming dolls and their equally splendid house. Instead of remaining a resource of convenience, the dollhouse only heightens Madison's loneliness and feeling of abandonment, and she requires out her stress on the dolls in devastating solutions. Gradually, Madison's grandmother recognizes the child's feelings through her tender care, Madison's soreness is eased and she restores the dolls and provides them back again a secure life. This haunting and thought-provoking guide is a person I would have cherished as a child and one particular I treasure as an grownup. Ages 9-12. (April Bedford)
